Plankton: Starting to feel the Temple Pressure
You should recognise the formula by now - the spits, the flits, the convulsions - this is 21st century freakpop, named after 21st century freakpop, made for 21st century freakpop fans. This is Alvin Band.
Sure, the whole thing is an immense rip-off of Animal Collective, but it’s so good I really don’t give a damn. It’s a case of credit where credit is due; Alvin Band’s debut Mantis Preying is both a sugar-coated aesthetic dream and a technical marvel of the highest order. It’s built entirely from vocals with not an instrument in sight, a twisted carnival mix of the soulful, the street, and the geek… if you like, it’s barbershop for the Pitchfork generation.
